So you're about ready to buy your first bike. Make no mistake - it is a minefield out there for the inexperienced, so a few suggestions on how to go about it.

1. Determine your budget.

2. Be realistic in your expectations of that budget.

3. Be careful whose advice you take..!!

The single most common thing we hear:

"I'm looking for my first bike. I don't want to spend a lot but need something reliable to get me through my L's and P's.

The single most common thing you hear from the bike shops:

"No, sorry, we don't have anything under $5000...."

Most motorcycle dealers do not want to know unless you have got big dollarsto spend - WE DO WANT TO KNOW..!!

Q. How much do I need to spend?

A. There are bikes around from as little as $2000. It is, however, very unlikely that these will be in roadworthy condition, and we see alot of these "bargains" come into the workshop following a private purchase. Invariably, these bikes end up costing the owner far more than they had bargained for. We try to have roadworthy bikes for sale from $3000.. We know what to look for and they all go through the workshop before they reach the showroom floor. They won't always be immaculate, but they'll do the job.

Q. New or used?

A. If you're going to keep the bike for a couple of years, it would be worth looking at new. The Hyosungs offer a 2 year warranty and are exceptional value for learners. If you expect to change your bike within, for example, six months, used would probably be the way to go as you're not going to get the full benefit of the warranty and will be exposed to the steepest part of the depreciation curve.

Q. Everyone has a different opinion on what is good and what is not. Who do I listen to ?

A. When you find a bike you like, getting a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic is a good idea, especially when buying privately. Buying from a licensed dealer is advisable when buying your first bike as a reputable dealer will be able to give you the advice you need.
